Scroll has unveiled its mainnet, a remarkable leap toward scaling the Ethereum ecosystem. It enhances the world’s premier smart contract platform and pioneering programmable blockchain. This launch marks the apex of two diligent years of development and stringent testing phases.
Embarking on an Ethereum Evolution
The journey to this pivotal point involved utilizing zero knowledge (zk) proofs to shift computation off the primary blockchain. As Ethereum continues to magnetize a broader user base and innovative projects, the inevitable uptick in network traffic could potentially hinder performance and escalate costs. However, the zk proofs technology emerges as a beacon of hope. It significantly boosts transaction throughput with quicker transaction speeds and slashed costs. This innovation heralds a momentous transition in Ethereum’s scaling prowess.
Scroll’s distinctive bytecode-level Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible zkEVM is designed to mirror the Ethereum experience almost identically. This ingenious setup empowers developers to seamlessly transfer and deploy their existing Ethereum projects onto Scroll, with zero modifications to the original codebase. This leap mirrors Scroll’s unwavering dedication to scale Ethereum without any trade-offs on security or decentralization.
Co-founder of Scroll, Haichen Shen, emphasizes, “At Scroll, we hold the mantle of security in high regard.” This ethos is manifested through a comprehensive security framework, encompassing a devoted internal security squad, exhaustive codebase audits conducted by multiple audit firms, and a staunch commitment to open-source principles since inception.
Triumphant Scroll Testnets to Mainnet Mastery
The transition from an extensive year of triumphant testnet phases to the mainnet launch showcases a journey of relentless progress. Scroll’s journey has been monumental with over 55 million transactions recorded on Alpha and Beta testnets and close to a million batches finalized to L1.
Sepolia, the latest testnet, witnessed over 900K wallet addresses and six million transactions in two months. Over 100 projects have already made their mark on Scroll testnets. They cover a vast terrain from infrastructure to decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming, and beyond.
On the Scroll mainnet, the user and developer experience is crafted to mirror that on Ethereum, fortified by zero knowledge cryptography. Initially, the focus is on onboarding infrastructure providers with a phased deployment strategy. This strategy aims to propel developers worldwide to build Web3 products, fostering a wider Ethereum user community.
Eyes on the Future
Envisioning a future where a significant portion of value transfer transpires on Ethereum’s Layer 2 (L2), co-founder Sandy Peng reflects, “Improved user and developer experience is the catalyst for this adoption.” The objective is to facilitate developers in crafting blockchain applications that will anchor web3 in real-world scenarios, enticing a new wave of users and propelling everyone forward.
Founded in 2021, Scroll was conceived to architect an open-source, scalable ecosystem powered by a zkEVM, while preserving Ethereum’s revered security features and the community’s dedication to decentralization. The forward trajectory includes exciting milestones like a decentralized prover network and sequencer.
Over the last two and a half years, Scroll’s collaborative efforts with the Ethereum Foundation’s Privacy and Scaling Explorations (PSE) group have been instrumental. Approximately 50 percent of the upstream PSE zkEVM codebase is credited to Scroll’s contributions. From its nascent stages, Scroll has remained an open-source, peer-reviewed, and permissionless project. It has a consistent track record of publishing research to enhance the understanding of ZK circuits, cryptography, and hardware acceleration.
