The Six Accused
The sextet, identified as Shaileshkumar Goyani, Brijeshkumar Patel, Hirenkumar Patel, Naineshkumar Patel, Nileshkumar Patel, and Raju Patel, allegedly operated sans a necessary money transmitting license in the state of New York, as per the details in the legal disclosure.
An unsealed testimony of an FBI agent tasked with spearheading the arrest divulged that the illicit operation was active between July 2021 and September 2023. The accused supposedly leveraged the darknet‘s obscurity. Their aim? To transform Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies into hard cash.
In a subsequent development, the U.S. Magistrate Judge gave a conditional release to one indicted, Naineshkumar Patel, as cited in the court dossier.
The FBI Cracks Down Hard
A rather grim facet of this ordeal emerged when an anonymous co-conspirator hinted at the nefarious origins of some of the funds. It was inferred that some of their clientele amassed wealth through drug trafficking. Moreover, the affluent ones were primarily hackers. The co-conspirator unveiled to an undercover agent that roughly $30 million was garnered over three years via the virtual to real currency exchange.
The pursuit bore fruit when an individual dispatching cash packages was apprehended in Westchester County, New York. This arrestee transitioned into a confidential informant. They aided law enforcement in about 80 controlled cash retrievals over eight months, amounting to nearly $15 million.
