The Next Generation of Cyber War

Hours before Russian troops invaded Ukraine, Ukraine was hit by new malware designed to wipe data. In the first 10 weeks of the year, 150 cyberattacks were launched against Ukraine, disabling dozens of government websites. Cyber war preceded and accompanied conventional war in Ukraine, giving the world of taste of what modern aggression looks like.

Cyber attacks aren’t limited to Ukraine, of course. 50% of US tech execs say state-sponsored cyber warfare is their biggest threat. Many consider the development of a national cybersecurity protocol top priority. Cyber attacks can shut down electrical grids, destroy technology, or even self-destruct power infrastructure.

Cyber war takes this threat to the next level, imitating the devastation of a natural disaster. Knocking out a power grid could create similar conditions to the 2021 Texas freeze by ruining infrastructure, eliminating food storage and water access, and killing hundreds of people. The US must secure itself.
