STIR/SHAKEN: New Legislation to Fight Spam Calls

When Americans receive over 175 million robocalls per day, it’s high time to admit spam calls are a problem. Worse than a persistent annoyance, phone scams cost Americans $10 billion in 2020. That’s theft. To fight back against scammers and protect consumers, phone carriers established spam algorithms.  STIR/SHAKEN is here to change the game for the good.

Unfortunately, the spam algorithms are not perfect. Thousands of business calls are incorrectly flagged as spam every day. Be it a high volume of calls, customer complaints, or lead blocking, there are a number of factors the algorithm tracks that can accidentally harm legitimate businesses.

Enter STIR/SHAKEN, the new system over a year in the making. Ever since the TRACED Act passed into law in March 2020, STIR/SHAKEN has been in development to improve caller ID authentication and combat spam calls. All service providers are onboard, sending every outgoing call to a system that checks both customer and number for verification.
