SHE is SCIENCE is an educational art project that announces the great women of Ukrainian science to the whole world. Sergey Tokarev, the founder of the IT company Roosh and initiator of SHE is SCIENCE, tells the details of the project.
The exhibition of this project has already visited many large cities in Ukraine and entered the European arena. In 2022, SHE is SCIENCE held presentations in Berlin and Brussels, with plans to conquer other cities.
The basis of this idea was to show that Ukrainian women in science are very talented and valued. A survey of ordinary residents prompted this idea. And after the majority of people couldn’t recall any women scientists in Ukraine, Sergey Tokarev and his colleagues decided to develop this direction further.
The SHE is SCIENCE Concept
The main goal of the “SHE is SCIENCE” project is to encourage young women and girls to choose STEM specialties (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and develop a career in this field. Within the framework of the project, it is planned, with the help of contemporary art, to destroy the stereotype that science is boring, difficult, and not for everyone, and also that it is not “a woman’s business”.
The main theme of the project at the exhibitions was the story of 12 great women of Ukrainian science. Representatives of art and literary creativity cooperated to implement the idea.
Sergey Maidukov and five artists created 12 portraits of the heroines. Instead of captions for the paintings, the project initiators used essays from the literary competition among girls aged 14-21. The essays describe the biography of the heroines in a confidential manner and in a personal unique style.
According to Sergey Tokarev, women have made a huge contribution to science. However, their names are undeservedly little known to the general public. That is why Ukrainian women scientists are the focus of this project.
Recognition in Ukraine
The exhibition was officially presented in 2021 on June 10 in Kyiv with the participation of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska. The presentation was accompanied by a charity auction. The funds raised at the event were used to pay for the education of the winners of the essay competition.
The resulting success in Ukraine prompted the interest of the organizers to show the exhibition outside its borders.
The first country that was able to meet with the exhibition was Germany. SHE is SCIENCE visited Berlin and Brandenburg. Then, there was a presentation in Belgium and France.
As Sergey Tokarev said, women in science are a reason for pride, and there are many in Ukraine and the world should know about them.
The SHE is SCIENCE project is organized by the charitable educational initiative STEM is FEM and with the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund in Ukraine (UNICEF) and UN Women in Ukraine as part of the UN global campaign Generation Equality.
