This bug has led to the invalidation of over 1,200 inscriptions. Although there is an agreement on the necessity to restore these inscriptions, the community is divided on whether to implement this retroactively or later.

The inscription validation bug stems from the indexer function of the Ordinals protocol, which exclusively counted inscriptions present in the first transaction input submitted up to and including version 0.5.1. Proposed Solution 1: Retroactive Reindexing of Orphan Inscriptions

One potential solution involves selecting a specific block height for retroactively indexing the “orphan” inscriptions. It would start from inscription 420,285 – the approximate point at which the first orphan inscription was identified.

Well-known Ordinals community member “Leonidas.og” supports this “purist” approach. It would guarantee the Ordinals protocol accurately reflects the logical ordering on-chain. Nevertheless, Leonidas.og also acknowledges the possible complications from retroactively reordering inscription numbers.

Proposed Solution 2: Future Inclusion of Orphan Inscriptions

An alternative solution, also explained by Leonidas.og, involves maintaining existing inscription numbers and selecting a block height for incorporating the orphan inscriptions at a future date. This method, however, would not assign official inscription numbers to the approximately 1,200 orphan inscriptions within the protocol.

As a result, the market would need to ascertain the value of these inscriptions as “misprints” or otherwise. Ordinals GitHub community member “Yilak” supports this option, contending that it is a superior choice since only a small percentage of inscription owners are affected.
