Gen Z, more than any other, finds itself at odds with past generations. Unfortunately, this is working to the downfall of all generations, old and new. Gen Z is seeing historic turnover rates, and modern employers are losing money attempting to keep them onboard. What makes Gen Z so different though?
First and foremost, the modern workplace can not be discussed without mentioning COVID-19 and the pandemic. This event was one of the greatest disruptions to industry in all of modern history. It also led to layoffs of Gen Z members at highly disproportionate rates. No other generation was as affected in terms of employment as Gen Z.
Past this, the culture of Gen Z versus generations of the past is extremely distinct. Gen Z values principles like cooperation, consideration, and transparency in the workplace far more than generations past. This would be enough of a disparity on its own, but it’s also continuously exacerbated by media sources as well.
Finally Gen Z tends to be far less committed to individual jobs and career paths. Few members of Gen Z are looking to linearly progress through and commit to a job. Today 65% of Gen Z talent quit within a year of their employment. There is more involved than simply coming up with office party ideas. More than generations past Gen Z is expected to take on job after job year after year.
These few factors put together start to create the image of what makes Gen Z so different. A generation that struggled through COVID, built on the culture of the internet, and with indecisive career paths. It’s not hard to see why there’s such a clash, the question is what’s next? How can businesses and employees alike work together to make it all work? At this point only time can tell.
