President Donald Trump has granted a full pardon to Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.
The US President announced the pardon on Truth Social (his social media platform). Trump added that he granted the Silk Road founder freedom to honor the Libertarian movement, who contributed to his bid to become the 47th US president.
Trump Criticizes the US Justice System
In his remarks, Trump called those who convicted Ross Ulbricht “lunatics,” adding that the life imprisonment sentence was “ridiculous.” US District Judge Katherine Forrest sentenced Ulbricht to life imprisonment without any option for parole following his role as the founder and operator of Silk Road.
Silk Road began operations in 2011. It was a dark web marketplace that allowed untraceable transactions of unlawful goods or services, such as illegal drugs, using Bitcoin (BTC). At the time, this cryptocurrency wasn’t well known except in niche computer circles.
Hence, this marketplace played an important role in making the public more aware of this digital currency.
Ross Ulbricht’s Arrest and Conviction
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) shut down Silk Road in 2013 after a series of investigations and arrested Ulbricht. In 2015, Judge Forrest convicted Ulbricht of operating the platform (by enabling drug transactions worth almost $183 million in BTC) and sentenced him to two life terms in prison.
Identifying Ross Ulbricht, who posted on the platform as “Dread Pirate Roberts,” was crucial to the marketplace shutdown. The FBI tracked him through his online activities, especially an email address linked to his real identity.
Authorities gained access to Silk Road servers with the help of undercover agents and cybercrime experts. These servers contained extensive evidence, such as private messages and transaction logs implicating Ulbricht.
The FBI arrested him at a San Francisco library, where he was accessing the marketplace’s back-end server. Ulbricht admitted that he founded Silk Road but claimed that he had transferred control of the platform to another person when he was arrested.
