Nine of the largest institutions in Bitcoin have pledged a combined $15 million over three years to a new group that will fund independent work on the network’s code, cryptography and long-term resilience.

The group, the Bitcoin Security Consortium, lists Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy and Strategy as founding members. Strategy, the corporate Bitcoin holder run by Michael Saylor, convened it. The money is meant for outside developers and researchers, not the member firms.

What the members pledged

The consortium describes itself as an initiative supporting the long-term security and resilience of the Bitcoin network, backed by member pledges of $15 million over three years. That figure is an aggregate across the nine firms; the announcement did not break out what each is putting in.

The funds are earmarked for open-source developers, researchers and organizations working on Bitcoin’s code, testing infrastructure and cryptography. Bitcoin‘s base layer has run since 2009 without being breached, though the wallets, apps and exchanges built on top of it are hacked often, part of why the group frames the money as long-term maintenance rather than a fix for any single flaw.

Quantum preparation runs in the background

Several members already run their own programs aimed at a future quantum-computing threat. Strategy said in February it would build a Bitcoin security program to address long-term quantum risk. Coinbase set up a quantum-computing advisory board in January. Blockstream has tested post-quantum signatures on its Liquid sidechain without changing Bitcoin’s consensus rules. BlackRock lists quantum computing as a risk in its Bitcoin ETF filings.

The concern centers on older coins. Researchers warn that Bitcoin held in address types that expose public keys could be vulnerable if a powerful quantum computer arrives; Blockstream researchers have put that exposure at roughly $600 billion.

How soon the threat matters is contested, including among consortium members. Blockstream CEO Adam Back has said Bitcoin is safe from quantum attacks for decades. Saylor has argued a quantum transition would strengthen the network rather than break it. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, by contrast, has urged the community to act by around 2030, and some developers have warned that rushing new cryptography could introduce fresh bugs.

Funders say they will not steer the protocol

The consortium frames the money as backing independent work. That reflects a long-standing norm in Bitcoin: firms pay developers, but the rules change only by rough consensus among developers, miners and users, not by any company’s decision. Institutional funding of Bitcoin’s developers has drawn scrutiny before, on concerns that backers could gain influence over the protocol; routing money through independent nonprofits is the industry’s usual answer.

The pledge follows other recent moves. On July 22, asset manager Strive said it would fund Bitcoin developers through the nonprofit Brink, saying Bitcoin’s strength comes from decentralized governance and independent development. Bitwise has made annual donations to Brink, OpenSats and the Human Rights Foundation’s Bitcoin Development Fund. Block’s Jack Dorsey earlier set up a legal defense fund for developers facing lawsuits. The consortium turns that pattern into a single, multi-firm commitment.

What comes next

The announcement did not say which developers or organizations will receive the money, or how grants will be decided. Coinbase’s advisory board was expected to publish a paper on quantum resilience. Bitcoin’s move to post-quantum cryptography is still under community discussion, with no agreed timeline.
