Fidelity’s latest report on crypto adoption predicts that nation-states, central banks, government treasuries, and even sovereign wealth funds will begin allocating Bitcoin (BTC) into their financial strategies this year, paving the way for more participation in the crypto market and potentially boosting the BTC price.
Analysts at Fidelity predict this based on the approval of BTC exchange-traded products (ETPs), such as spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs), in 2024, stating how these vehicles made it easier for pensions, endowments, and other institutions to invest in BTC.
Similarly, a growing acceptance of BTC as a worthy financial asset may encourage governments to participate in the cryptocurrency market.
The report reads:
While we may not know what the future holds for the macroeconomic environment for 2025, we do think bitcoin may continue to provide benefits in a portfolio for multiple economic scenarios. If a recession does occur, it will likely be responded to with additional monetary and fiscal stimulus, which historically has been good for bitcoin.
Fidelity: More Nations To Adopt Bitcoin in 2025
The report also touched on countries and nation-states like El Salvador and Bhutan, citing them as examples of “successful nation-state Bitcoin adoption.”
These jurisdictions have demonstrated how proactive Bitcoin strategies can yield substantial returns, the report reads, with Bhutan’s investment through its sovereign wealth fund and El Salvador’s adoption of BTC as legal tender highlighting how governments can use cryptocurrency to address challenges such as inflation, currency debasement, and fiscal deficits.
Fidelity suggests that more nations may follow suit, particularly as the economic risks of inaction increasingly outweigh the potential adoption costs.
Historically, governments like those of the United States and China have held Bitcoin, though primarily through the seizure of assets linked to illicit activities rather than through deliberate investment. Fidelity believes this trend is shifting, predicting 2025 as a turning point for broader acceptance and adoption of BTC by governments.
