Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL) and ai16z (AI16z) crashed over the past week following broader market trends.
The price of AI16Z, a top AI agent token was created with the Eliza OS agent model and works as a DAO-run venture fund, halved from $2.2 last week to $0.943 at the time of writing. Its market capitalization is down by 16.54% to $1.04 billion, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

Similarly, VIRTUAL, known for enabling users to build decentralized AI-powered digital assistants, dropped by almost 45% to trade at $2.28. Its market cap has decreased by over 63% since last week. It dropped from a peak of $4.13 billion on January 6 to its current value of $1.48 billion.
GOAT’s Price Also Affected
According to CoinMarketCap, prices of niche-themed AI agent tokens, like the Goatseus maximus (GOAT), also declined significantly from last week; GOAT dropped from $0.5 to $0.305, indicating a 41% drop.
AI agent tokens became popular in the crypto space because they use computational languages like Truth Terminal to enable tokens to interact actively with their followers. The GOAT meme token was created in March 2024 by researcher Andy Ayrey.
Many were attracted to the AI token’s clever answers on X, with Ayrey including a crypto wallet with it. One of Truth Terminal’s comments inspired the creation of the GOAT meme coin. Since then, thousands of other tokens with AI themes have been created using different frameworks.
Impact On AI Agent Token Market Value
Due to the widespread use of AI agent tokens, their total market value reached over $15 billion in early January. Though, it has dropped to over $11 billion at the time of writing.
Even though there’s a need to differentiate between meme coins marketed as AI projects and the actual AI agent tokens, the recent decline in the prices of AI agent tokens represents a correction.
Two weeks ago, Dragonfly executive Haseeb Qureshi, during his New Year market prediction, said that AI agents would rise in popularity this year. However, the initial excitement and interest in them would drop significantly before the year ends.
