With each passing day, the Lightning Network seems to be expanding into newer terrain in terms of its overall accessibility. In this regard, Bitrefill, a crypto cellphone top-up provider has just released a new feature that will effectively allow users to purchase vouchers which can then be redeemed at various online retailers including Amazon.

Bitrefill is no stranger to the Lightning Network. The company has been experimenting with the technology since last year and was one of the first established online players to accept payments via this second layer protocol.

What this really means for your average crypto enthusiast?

According to a recent press release, Bitrefill will be accepting LN payments for vouchers. However, the dev team is still waiting for the network to become more stable— especially since it is currently in its Beta testing stage.

Vouchers have become an increasingly popular mode of facilitating business transactions since they don’t require merchants to change their existing business models to incorporate crypto payments.

More on the matter

In terms of the list of available vouchers, Bitrefill announced that it will support crypto payments for a wide array of businesses including:

  • Amazon

  • Uber

  • Google Play

  • Hotels.com

While this list is still quite weak, company executives are optimistic that more service providers will be added in the coming few weeks.

Lastly, it is also worth mentioning that Bitrefill currently accepts LN payments along with BTC, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dash, and Dogecoin.

Final Take

Ever since its inception in 2014, Bitrefill has been actively pushing for widespread cryptocurrency adoption across North America and Europe. However, how this latest venture fares for the company remains to be seen.
