Marathon Digital has embarked on an eco-friendly Bitcoin mining venture. The firm utilizes methane extracted from a landfill site. This groundbreaking 280-kW off-grid pilot project is nestled in the heart of Utah.
A Strategic Methane Collaboration for a Sustainable Vision
Marathon Digital has joined forces with Nodal Power, which specializes in generating energy from landfill gas. The firm is primarily active in the southeastern United States and Texas. With a substantial $13 million seed funding acquired in August, Nodal Power is poised to manage two sites, including a data center.
Marathon Digital has articulated that this initiative is a critical component of its broader strategy. This approach demonstrates the company’s capacity to harness methane emissions from landfills. It will transform them into electricity and subsequently channel them to power Bitcoin mining operations.
Fred Thiel, the CEO of Marathon, conveyed optimism about the pilot project’s potential. He stated, “Should the results of the pilot project meet our expectations, we look forward to expanding our footprint in this area and helping landfill operators and others meet their environmental targets.”
The Bitcoin mining sector is vigorously exploring renewable energy alternatives. For instance, Genesis Digital Assets Limited established an 8-MW facility in Sweden in August that leverages hydropower.
Marathon’s Leap into Immersive Cooling Technology
Marathon also unveiled a 200-MW immersion-cooled facility in Abu Dhabi’s eco-friendly Masdar City in late October. A report released by the company during the same month indicated that cryptocurrency mining at landfill sites is feasible and offers multiple benefits.
That includes advantages for miners, landfill proprietors, and notably, the environment. As per the United Nations, methane poses a significantly higher threat to our environment than carbon dioxide.
Fred Thiel further adds:
“The methane naturally produced from landfills, biowaste, and elsewhere is often stranded, and Bitcoin miners like Marathon are uniquely positioned to help convert this harmful gas into a productive source of clean, renewable energy.”
