How A Gift Sparked a Design Revolution

design revolution

Did you know that the Bulova Accutron wrist watch sparked a creative movement that has spread across the architecture and fashion worlds?  Accutron watches featured a unique design: the mechanisms of the watch could be seen from the outside. This unique and attractive design inspired many other designers, including architects and those in the fashion world.

Architects  Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers were some of the people influenced by the design and went on to create the Centre Pompidou. This building was iconic in its design because like the Accutron, it featured all of its mechanisms on the outside!

Tinker Hatfield was another architect who was inspired by the Accutron and the Centre Pompidou. He shifted from designing buildings to designing shoes in the 1980’s, and went on to make the Nike Air Max 1. This was the first sneaker to feature a transparent bubble that showed the inner workings of the shoe, and it led to the Nike Air Max being one of the most popular shoes of our time.

The influence of Accutron watches led to the creation of one of the most iconic sneakers of our time, with millions being sold. To learn more about how the Accutron Spaceview influenced the creative movement, take a look at the infographic below:
