Can Ethereum Really Attract one Million Active Developers?

Recent announcements seem to hint at major growth coming to Ethereum. More specifically, there is an effort underway to expand the developer family and surpass 1 million coders. It is a very interesting target, considering there are already over 200,000 active Ethereum coders and developers today.

One Million Devs

The One Million Devs initiative should not be taken lightly. It is a genuine effort to make Etheruem more appealing to coders and developers all over the world. To do so, the network needs to scale well beyond what it is capable of today. That is part of the Ethereum 2.0 roadmap, a major network upgrade that is designed to bring a lot of positive attention to this ecosystem as a whole.  By actively focusing on getting more developers to experiment with the technology, the coming years may prove to be very interesting in their own regard.

That being said, there is still a lot of work to be done prior to reaching this milestone.  As of right now, the website claims there are just over 200,000 active developers working with Ethereum and its technology stack. Multiplying this figure by five is no easy feat by any stretch of the imagination. Additionally, there is also the ongoing competition by other projects offering access to smart contracts and dApps. It is evident that not everyone will flock to Ethereum first unless the community can change the narrative.

What is Being Offered?

The approach maintained by the Ethereum team is rather interesting. First of all, they will provide the technology for developers to create decentralized profiles. These allow the developers to share projects, showcase their own skills, and build up a reputation. It is also a way to connect with friends over time, as this developer-oriented effort is also about making new friends first and foremost.

On top of that ,there will be “interactive quests and adventures”. A very intriguing way of phrasing it, as this would make aspiring developers think there is some degree of progress to be made. These quests and adventures allow users to experience new tools and concepts. It also seems that users will be able to earn rewards for completing these feats, although very little is known about how that will work exactly.

Passing the Torch

While these interactive quests and adventures will undoubtedly attract newcomers, it is also a way to pass the torch. As more developers hit their stride when working with Ethereum technology, it is expected they will create their own Adventures and Quests. This helps in keeping everything fresh and up-to-date, while also inviting developers to offer solutions which may help the ecosystem grow even further. A nifty approach, albeit it remains to be seen if and how successful this endeavor will be in the end.
